TracyTupman,andAugustusSnodgrass,wereseverallycalledintothebox;bothcorroboratedthetestimonyoftheirunhappyfriend;andeachwasdriventothevergeofdesperationbyexcessivebadgering.SusannahSanderswasthencalled,andexaminedbySerjeantBuzfuz,andcross-examinedbySerjeantSnubbin.HadalwayssaidandbelievedthatPickwickwouldmarryMrs.Bardell;knewthatMrs.Bardell’sbeingengagedtoPickwickwasthecurrenttopicofconversationintheneighbourhood,afterthefaintinginJuly;hadbeentolditherselfbyMrs.Mudberrywhichkeptamangle,andMrs.Bunkinwhichclear-starched,butdidnotseeeitherMrs.MudberryorMrs.Bunkinincourt.HadheardPickwickaskthelittleboyhowheshouldliketohaveanotherfather.DidnotknowthatMrs.Bardellwasatthattimekeepingcompanywiththebaker,butdidknowthatthebakerwasthenasinglemanandisnowmarried.Couldn’tswearthatMrs.Bardellwasnotveryfondofthebaker,butshouldthinkthatthebakerwasnotveryfondofMrs.Bardell,orhewouldn’thavemarriedsomebodyelse.ThoughtMrs.BardellfaintedawayonthemorninginJuly,becausePickwickaskedhertonametheday:knewthatshe(witness)faintedawaystonedeadwhenMr.Sandersaskedhertonametheday,andbelievedthateverybodyascalledherselfaladywoulddothesame,undersimilarcircumstances.HeardPickwickasktheboythequestionaboutthemarbles,butuponheroathdidnotknowthedifferencebetweenan‘alleytor’anda‘commoney.’
