           Thelandlady’sglasseswerelittle,thin,blown-glasstumblers,andthosewhichhadbeenborrowedfromthepublic-houseweregreat,dropsical,bloatedarticles,eachsupportedonahugegoutyleg.Thiswouldhavebeeninitselfsufficienttohavepossessedthecompanywiththerealstateofaffairs;buttheyoungwomanofallworkhadpreventedthepossibilityofanymisconceptionarisinginthemindofanygentlemanuponthesubject,byforciblydraggingeveryman’sglassaway,longbeforehehadfinishedhisbeer,andaudiblystating,despitethewinksandinterruptionsofMr.BobSawyer,thatitwastobeconveyeddownstairs,andwashedforthwith.

           Itisaveryillwindthatblowsnobodyanygood.Theprimmanintheclothboots,whohadbeenunsuccessfullyattemptingtomakeajokeduringthewholetimetheroundgamelasted,sawhisopportunity,andavailedhimselfofit.Theinstanttheglassesdisappeared,hecommencedalongstoryaboutagreatpubliccharacter,whosenamehehadforgotten,makingaparticularlyhappyreplytoanothereminentandillustriousindividualwhomhehadneverbeenabletoidentify.Heenlargedatsomelengthandwithgreatminutenessupondiverscollateralcircumstances,distantlyconnectedwiththeanecdoteinhand,butforthelifeofhimhecouldn’trecollectatthatprecisemomentwhattheanecdotewas,althoughhehadbeeninthehabitoftellingthestorywithgreatapplauseforthelasttenyears.
