‘SoallI’vecomeabout,isjestthishere,’saidSam,disregardingtheinterruption;‘first,togivemygovernor’snotice—thereitis.Secondly,topaytherent—hereitis.Thirdly,tosayasallhisthingsistobeputtogether,andgivetoanybodyaswesendsfor’em.Fourthly,thatyoumaylettheplaceassoonasyoulike—andthat’sall.’
‘Whateverhashappened,’saidMrs.Bardell,‘Ialwayshavesaid,andalwayswillsay,thatineveryrespectbutone,Mr.Pickwickhasalwaysbehavedhimselflikeaperfectgentleman.Hismoneyalwaysasgoodasthebank—always.’
AsMrs.Bardellsaidthis,sheappliedherhandkerchieftohereyes,andwentoutoftheroomtogetthereceipt.
Samwellknewthathehadonlytoremainquiet,andthewomenweresuretotalk;sohelookedalternatelyatthetinsaucepan,thetoastedcheese,thewall,andtheceiling,inprofoundsilence.
‘Poordear!’saidMrs.Cluppins.
‘Ah,poorthing!’repliedMrs.Sanders.Samsaidnothing.Hesawtheywerecomingtothesubject.
