           ‘Praybequiet,Payne,’saidthedoctor’ssecond.‘Whydidyounotcommunicatethisfacttomethismorning,Sir?’

           ‘Tobesuretobesure,’saidthemanwiththecamp-stoolindignantly.

           ‘Ientreatyoutobequiet,Payne,’saidtheother.‘MayIrepeatmyquestion,Sir?’

           ‘Because,Sir,’repliedMr.Winkle,whohadhadtimetodeliberateuponhisanswer,‘because,Sir,youdescribedanintoxicatedandungentlemanlypersonaswearingacoatwhichIhavethehonour,notonlytowearbuttohaveinventedtheproposeduniform,Sir,ofthePickwickClubinLondon.ThehonourofthatuniformIfeelboundtomaintain,andItherefore,withoutinquiry,acceptedthechallengewhichyouofferedme.’

           ‘MydearSir,’saidthegood-humouredlittledoctoradvancingwithextendedhand,‘Ihonouryourgallantry.
