           Aprofoundsilence,quitecontrarytoMr.Pickwick’sexpectation,succeeded.‘Youdon’tfindthissortofthingdisagreeable,Ihope,sir?’saidhisrighthandneighbour,agentlemaninacheckedshirtandMosaicstuds,withacigarinhismouth.

           ‘Notintheleast,’repliedMr.Pickwick;‘Ilikeitverymuch,althoughIamnosmokermyself.’

           ‘IshouldbeverysorrytosayIwasn’t,’interposedanothergentlemanontheoppositesideofthetable.‘It’sboardandlodgingstome,issmoke.’

           Mr.Pickwickglancedatthespeaker,andthoughtthatifitwerewashingtoo,itwouldbeallthebetter.

           Heretherewasanotherpause.Mr.Pickwickwasastranger,andhiscominghadevidentlycastadampupontheparty.

           ‘Mr.Grundy’sgoingtoobligethecompanywithasong,’saidthechairman.

           ‘No,heain’t,’saidMr.Grundy.

           ‘Whynot?’saidthechairman.

           ‘Becausehecan’t,’saidMr.Grundy.‘Youhadbettersayhewon’t,’repliedthechairman.
