TothisdeterminationMr.Winklewasurgedbyavarietyofconsiderations,thefirstofwhichwashisreputationwiththeclub.Hehadalwaysbeenlookeduptoasahighauthorityonallmattersofamusementanddexterity,whetheroffensive,defensive,orinoffensive;andif,onthisveryfirstoccasionofbeingputtothetest,heshrunkbackfromthetrial,beneathhisleader’seye,hisnameandstandingwerelostforever.Besides,herememberedtohavehearditfrequentlysurmisedbytheuninitiatedinsuchmattersthatbyanunderstoodarrangementbetweentheseconds,thepistolswereseldomloadedwithball;and,furthermore,hereflectedthatifheappliedtoMr.Snodgrasstoactashissecond,anddepictedthedangeringlowingterms,thatgentlemanmightpossiblycommunicatetheintelligencetoMr.Pickwick,whowouldcertainlylosenotimeintransmittingittothelocalauthorities,andthuspreventthekillingormaimingofhisfollower.
Suchwerehisthoughtswhenhereturnedtothecoffee-room,andintimatedhisintentionofacceptingthedoctor’schallenge.
