Silentlyandpatientlydidthedoctorbearallthis,andallthehandingsofnegus,andwatchingforglasses,anddartingforbiscuits,andcoquetting,thatensued;but,afewsecondsafterthestrangerhaddisappearedtoleadMrs.Budgertohercarriage,hedartedswiftlyfromtheroomwitheveryparticleofhishitherto-bottled-upindignationeffervescing,fromallpartsofhiscountenance,inaperspirationofpassion.
Thestrangerwasreturning,andMr.Tupmanwasbesidehim.Hespokeinalowtone,andlaughed.Thelittledoctorthirstedforhislife.Hewasexulting.Hehadtriumphed.
