           ‘Andwithouthavingsufficientpropertyofyourowntoaffordyourhusbandanypermanentassistanceinexchangefortheworldlyadvantageswhichyouknewhewouldhavegainedifhehadmarriedagreeablytohisfather’swishes?’saidtheoldgentleman.‘Thisiswhatboysandgirlscalldisinterestedaffection,tilltheyhaveboysandgirlsoftheirown,andthentheyseeitinarougherandverydifferentlight!’

           Arabella’stearsflowedfast,asshepleadedinextenuationthatshewasyoungandinexperienced;thatherattachmenthadaloneinducedhertotakethesteptowhichshehadresorted;andthatshehadbeendeprivedofthecounselandguidanceofherparentsalmostfrominfancy.

           ‘Itwaswrong,’saidtheoldgentlemaninamildertone,‘verywrong.Itwasromantic,unbusinesslike,foolish.’

           ‘Itwasmyfault;allmyfault,Sir,’repliedpoorArabella,weeping.

           ‘Nonsense,’saidtheoldgentleman;‘itwasnotyourfaultthathefellinlovewithyou,Isuppose?Yesitwas,though,’saidtheoldgentleman,lookingratherslilyatArabella.‘Itwasyourfault.Hecouldn’thelpit.
