           ‘Youdon’tknowme,ma’am?’hesaid,lookingsointentlyatArabellathatshebegantofeelalarmed.

           ‘No,sir,’sherepliedtimidly.

           ‘No,’saidthegentleman,nursinghisleftleg;‘Idon’tknowhowyoushould.Youknowmyname,though,ma’am.’

           ‘DoI?’saidArabella,trembling,thoughshescarcelyknewwhy.‘MayIaskwhatitis?’

           ‘Presently,ma’am,presently,’saidthestranger,nothavingyetremovedhiseyesfromhercountenance.‘Youhavebeenrecentlymarried,ma’am?’

           ‘Ihave,’repliedArabella,inascarcelyaudibletone,layingasideherwork,andbecominggreatlyagitatedasathought,thathadoccurredtoherbefore,struckmoreforciblyuponhermind.

           ‘Withouthavingrepresentedtoyourhusbandtheproprietyoffirstconsultinghisfather,onwhomheisdependent,Ithink?’saidthestranger.
