           ‘YougivemenogreatencouragementtoconcludewhatIhavetosay,’observedMr.Pickwick,‘butIhadbetterdosoatonce.Thisyoungpersonisnotonlyattachedtoyourson,Mr.Weller,butyoursonisattachedtoher.’

           ‘Vell,’saidMr.Weller,‘thishere’saprettysorto’thingtocometoafather’sears,thisis!’

           ‘Ihaveobservedthemonseveraloccasions,’saidMr.Pickwick,makingnocommentonMr.Weller’slastremark;‘andentertainnodoubtatallaboutit.SupposingIweredesirousofestablishingthemcomfortablyasmanandwifeinsomelittlebusinessorsituation,wheretheymighthopetoobtainadecentliving,whatshouldyouthinkofit,Mr.Weller?’

           Atfirst,Mr.Wellerreceivedwithwryfacesapropositioninvolvingthemarriageofanybodyinwhomhetookaninterest;but,asMr.Pickwickarguedthepointwithhim,andlaidgreatstressonthefactthatMarywasnotawidow,hegraduallybecamemoretractable.Mr.Pickwickhadgreatinfluenceoverhim,andhehadbeenmuchstruckwithMary’sappearance;having,infact,bestowedseveralveryunfatherlywinksuponher,already.AtlengthhesaidthatitwasnotforhimtoopposeMr.
