Mr. Solomon Pell, assisted by a Select Committee of Coachmen, arranges the affairs of the elder Mr.
Inpursuanceofthisnotableresolution,theservicesofthemottled-facedgentlemanandoftwootherveryfatcoachmen—selectedbyMr.Weller,probably,withaviewtotheirwidthandconsequentwisdom—wereputintorequisition;andthisassistancehavingbeensecured,thepartyproceededtothepublic-houseinPortugalStreet,whenceamessengerwasdespatchedtotheInsolventCourtovertheway,requiringMr.SolomonPell’simmediateattendance.
ThemessengerfortunatelyfoundMr.SolomonPellincourt,regalinghimself,businessbeingratherslack,withacoldcollationofanAbernethybiscuitandasaveloy.Themessagewasnosoonerwhisperedinhisearthanhethrusttheminhispocketamongvariousprofessionaldocuments,andhurriedoverthewaywithsuchalacritythathereachedtheparlourbeforethemessengerhadevenemancipatedhimselffromthecourt.
‘Gentlemen,’saidMr.Pell,touchinghishat,‘myservicetoyouall.Idon’tsayittoflatteryou,gentlemen,buttherearenotfiveothermenintheworld,thatI’dhavecomeoutofthatcourtfor,to-day.’
‘Sobusy,eh?’saidSam.
‘Busy!’repliedPell;‘I’mcompletelysewnup,asmyfriendthelateLordChancellormanyatimeusedtosaytome,gentlemen,whenhecameoutfromhearingappealsintheHouseofLords.Poorfellow;hewasverysusceptibletofatigue;heusedtofeelthoseappealsuncommonly.
