           ‘He’sa-stoppinghereto-nightonhisvaytotown,withacoupleoffriends,’repliedSam.

           ‘IsMr.Winkleoneofthem?’inquiredPott,withaslightfrown.

           ‘No,Sir.Mr.Vinklestopsathomenow,’rejoinedSam.‘He’smarried.’

           ‘Married!’exclaimedPott,withfrightfulvehemence.Hestopped,smileddarkly,andadded,inalow,vindictivetone,‘Itserveshimright!’Havinggivenventtothiscruelebullitionofdeadlymaliceandcold-bloodedtriumphoverafallenenemy,Mr.PottinquiredwhetherMr.Pickwick’sfriendswere‘blue?’ReceivingamostsatisfactoryanswerintheaffirmativefromSam,whoknewasmuchaboutthematterasPotthimself,heconsentedtoaccompanyhimtoMr.Pickwick’sroom,whereaheartywelcomeawaitedhim,andanagreementtoclubtheirdinnerstogetherwasatoncemadeandratified.

           ‘AndhowaremattersgoingoninEatanswill?’inquiredMr.Pickwick,whenPotthadtakenaseatnearthefire,andthewholepartyhadgottheirwetbootsoff,anddryslipperson.‘IstheINDEPENDENTstillinbeing?’

           ‘TheINDEPENDENT,sir,’repliedPott,‘isstilldraggingonawretchedandlingeringcareer.
