           Samleftitwiththelandlady,andwasreturningtopullhismaster’sbootsoff,afterdryinghimselfbythekitchenfire,whenglancingcasuallythroughahalf-openeddoor,hewasarrestedbythesightofagentlemanwithasandyheadwhohadalargebundleofnewspaperslyingonthetablebeforehim,andwasperusingtheleadingarticleofonewithasettledsneerwhichcurleduphisnoseandallotherfeaturesintoamajesticexpressionofhaughtycontempt.

           ‘Hollo!’saidSam,‘Ioughttoknowthat‘ereheadandthemfeatures;theeyeglass,too,andthebroad-brimmedtile!Eatansvilltovit,orI’maRoman.’

           Samwastakenwithatroublesomecough,atonce,forthepurposeofattractingthegentleman’sattention;thegentlemanstartingatthesound,raisedhisheadandhiseyeglass,anddisclosedtoviewtheprofoundandthoughtfulfeaturesofMr.Pott,oftheEatanswillGAZETTE.

           ‘Beggin’yourpardon,sir,’saidSam,advancingwithabow,‘mymaster’shere,Mr.Pott.’

           ‘Hush!hush!’criedPott,drawingSamintotheroom,andclosingthedoor,withacountenanceofmysteriousdreadandapprehension.

           ‘Wot’sthematter,Sir?’inquiredSam,lookingvacantlyabouthim.

           ‘Notawhisperofmyname,’repliedPott;‘thisisabuffneighbourhood.IftheexcitedandirritablepopulaceknewIwashere,Ishouldbetorntopieces.’

           ‘No!Vouldyou,sir?’inquiredSam.
