TheTeacherswerejust,fortheyhadbeenappointedbytheCouncils,andtheCouncilsarethevoiceofalljustice,fortheyarethevoiceofallmen.Andifsometimes,inthesecretdarknessofourheart,weregretthatwhichbefellusonourfifteenthbirthday,weknowthatitwasthroughourownguilt.Wehadbrokenalaw,forwehadnotpaidheedtothewordsofourTeachers.TheTeachershadsaidtousall:
“DarenotchooseinyourmindstheworkyouwouldliketodowhenyouleavetheHomeoftheStudents.YoushalldothatwhichtheCouncilofVocationsshallprescribeforyou.FortheCouncilofVocationsknowsinitsgreatwisdomwhereyouareneededbyyourbrothermen,betterthanyoucanknowitinyourunworthylittleminds.Andifyouarenotneededbyyourbrotherman,thereisnoreasonforyoutoburdentheearthwithyourbodies.”
Weknewthiswell,intheyearsofourchildhood,butourcursebrokeourwill.Wewereguiltyandweconfessithere:wewereguiltyofthegreatTransgressionofPreference.Wepreferredsomeworkandsomelessonstotheothers.WedidnotlistenwelltothehistoryofalltheCouncilselectedsincetheGreatRebirth.ButwelovedtheScienceofThings.Wewishedtoknow.Wewishedtoknowaboutallthethingswhichmaketheeartharoundus.WeaskedsomanyquestionsthattheTeachersforbadeit.
Wethinkthattherearemysteriesintheskyandunderthewaterandintheplantswhichgrow.ButtheCouncilofScholarshassaidthattherearenomysteries,andtheCouncilofScholarsknowsallthings.AndwelearnedmuchfromourTeachers.
