Ihadnotkeptmyselflonginthisposture,butIsawtheboatdrawneartheshore,asiftheylookedforacreektothrustinat,fortheconvenienceoflanding. However,astheydidnotcomequitefarenough,theydidnotseethelittleinletwhereIformerlylandedmyrafts;butruntheirboatonshoreuponthebeach,atabouthalfamilefromme,whichwasveryhappyforme; forotherwisetheywouldhavelandedjust,asImaysay,atmydoor,andwouldsoonhavebeatenmeoutofmycastle,andperhapshaveplunderedmeofallIhad.
Whentheywereonshore,IwasfullysatisfiedthattheywereEnglishmen,atleastmostofthem; oneortwoIthoughtwereDutch,butitdidnotproveso. Therewereinallelevenmen,whereofthreeofthemIfoundwereunarmed,and,asIthought,bound; andwhenthefirstfourorfiveofthemwerejumpedonshore,theytookthosethreeoutoftheboat,asprisoners. OneofthethreeIcouldperceiveusingthemostpassionategesturesofentreaty,affliction,anddespair,eventoakindofextravagance; theothertwo,Icouldperceive,lifteduptheirhandssometimes,andappearedconcernedindeed,butnottosuchadegreeasthefirst.
