Whenthishadagitatedmythoughtsfortwohours,ormore,withsuchviolencethatitsetmyverybloodintoaferment,andmypulsebeatashighasifIhadbeeninafever,merelywiththeextraordinaryofmymindaboutit,Nature,asifIhadbeenfatiguedandexhaustedwiththeverythoughtofit,threwmeintoasoundsleep. OnewouldhavethoughtIshouldhavedreamedofit,butIdidnot,norofanythingrelatingtoit; butIdreamedthatasIwasgoingoutinthemorning,asusual,frommycastle,Isawupontheshoretwocanoesandelevensavagescomingtoland,andthattheybroughtwiththemanothersavage,whomtheyweregoingtokillinordertoeathim; when,onasudden,thesavagethattheyweregoingtokilljumpedaway,andranforhislife. AndIthought,inmysleep,thathecamerunningintomylittlethickgrovebeforemyfortificationtohidehimself; andthatI,seeinghimalone,andnotperceivingthattheothersoughthimthatway,showedmyselftohim,andsmilinguponhim,encouragedhim;thathekneeleddowntome,seemingtopraymetoassisthim; uponwhichIshowedmyladder,madehimgoup,andcarriedhimintomycave,andhebecamemyservant; andthatassoonasIhadgottenthisman,Isaidtomyself, "NowImaycertainlyventuretothemainland; forthisfellowwillservemeasapilot,andwilltellmewhattodo,andwhithertogoforprovisions, andwhithernottogoforfearofbeingdevoured;whatplacestoventureinto,andwhattoescape." Iwakedwiththisthought,andwasundersuchinexpressibleimpressionsofjoyattheprospectofmyescapeinmydream,thatthedisappointmentswhichIfeltuponcomingtomyselfandfindingitwasnomorethanadreamwereequallyextravaganttheotherway,andthrewmeintoaverygreatdejectionofspirit.
