Istoodlikeonethunder-struck,orasifIhadseenanapparition. Ilistened,Ilookedroundme,Icouldhearnothing,norseeanything. Iwentuptoarisingground,tolookfarther. Iwentuptheshore,anddowntheshore,butitwasallone; Icouldseenootherimpressionbutthatone,Iwenttoitagaintoseeiftherewereanymore,andtoobserveifitmightnotbemyfancy; buttherewasnoroomforthat,fortherewasexactlytheveryprintofafoot—toes,heel,andeverypartofafoot. Butafterinnumerableflutteringthoughts,likeamanperfectlyconfusedandoutofmyself,Icamehometomyfortification, notfeeling,aswesay,thegroundIwenton,butterrifiedtothelastdegree,lookingbehindmeateverytwoorthreesteps,mistakingeverybushandtree,andfancyingeverystumpatadistancetobeaman; norisitpossibletodescribehowmanyvariousshapesaffrightedimaginationrepresentedthingstomein,howmanywildideaswerefoundeverymomentinmyfancy,andwhatstrangeunaccountablewhimsiescameintomythoughtsbytheway.
