ThiswilltestifyformethatIwasnotidle,andthatIsparednopainstobringtopasswhateverappearednecessaryformycomfortablesupport; forIconsideredthekeepingupabreedoftamecreaturesthusatmyhandwouldbealivingmagazineofflesh,milk,butter,andcheeseformeaslongasIlivedintheplace,ifitweretobefortyyears; andthatkeepingtheminmyreachdependedentirelyuponmyperfectingmyenclosurestosuchadegreethatImightbesureofkeepingthemtogether; which,bythismethod,indeed,Isoeffectuallysecuredthatwhentheselittlestakesbegantogrow,IhadplantedthemsoverythickIwasforcedtopullsomeofthemupagain.
InthisplacealsoIhadmygrapesgrowing,whichIprincipallydependedonformywinterstoreofraisins,andwhichIneverfailedtopreserveverycarefully,asthebestandmostagreeabledaintyofmywholediet. Andindeedtheywerenotagreeableonly,butphysical,wholesome,nourishing,andrefreshingtothelastdegree.
