‘Come,there’snouseincryinglikethat!’ saidAlicetoherself,rathersharply; ‘Iadviseyoutoleaveoffthisminute!’ Shegenerallygaveherselfverygoodadvice,(thoughsheveryseldomfollowedit),andsometimesshescoldedherselfsoseverelyastobringtearsintohereyes; andoncesherememberedtryingtoboxherownearsforhavingcheatedherselfinagameofcroquetshewasplayingagainstherself, forthiscuriouschildwasveryfondofpretendingtobetwopeople. ‘Butit’snousenow,’thoughtpoorAlice,‘topretendtobetwopeople! Why,there’shardlyenoughofmelefttomakeonerespectableperson!’
Soonhereyefellonalittleglassboxthatwaslyingunderthetable:sheopenedit, andfoundinitaverysmallcake,onwhichthewords‘EATME’ werebeautifullymarkedincurrants.
