           OnedaytheBaronetsurprised"herladyship,"ashejocularlycalledher,seatedatthatoldandtunelesspianointhedrawing-room,whichhadscarcelybeentouchedsinceBeckySharpplayedquadrillesuponitseatedatthepianowiththeutmostgravityandsquallingtothebestofherpowerinimitationofthemusicwhichshehadsometimesheard.Thelittlekitchen-maidonherpromotionwasstandingathermistress’sside,quitedelightedduringtheoperation,andwaggingherheadupanddownandcrying,"Lor,Mum,’tisbittiful"—justlikeagenteelsycophantinarealdrawing-room.

           ThisincidentmadetheoldBaronetroarwithlaughter,asusual.HenarratedthecircumstanceadozentimestoHorrocksinthecourseoftheevening,andgreatlytothediscomfitureofMissHorrocks.Hethrummedonthetableasifithadbeenamusicalinstrument,andsqualledinimitationofhermannerofsinging.Hevowedthatsuchabeautifulvoiceoughttobecultivatedanddeclaredsheoughttohavesinging-masters,inwhichproposalsshesawnothingridiculous.
