TheregimentwithitsofficerswastobetransportedinshipsprovidedbyHisMajesty’sgovernmentfortheoccasion:andintwodaysafterthefestiveassemblyatMrs.O’Dowd’sapartments,inthemidstofcheeringfromalltheEastIndiashipsintheriver,andthemilitaryonshore,thebandplaying"GodSavetheKing,"theofficerswavingtheirhats,andthecrewshurrahinggallantly,thetransportswentdowntheriverandproceededunderconvoytoOstend.MeanwhilethegallantJoshadagreedtoescorthissisterandtheMajor’swife,thebulkofwhosegoodsandchattels,includingthefamousbirdofparadiseandturban,werewiththeregimentalbaggage:sothatourtwoheroinesdroveprettymuchunencumberedtoRamsgate,wheretherewereplentyofpacketsplying,inoneofwhichtheyhadaspeedypassagetoOstend.
ThatperiodofJos’slifewhichnowensuedwassofullofincident,thatitservedhimforconversationformanyyearsafter,andeventhetiger-huntstorywasputasideformorestirringnarrativeswhichhehadtotellaboutthegreatcampaignofWaterloo.Assoonashehadagreedtoescorthissisterabroad,itwasremarkedthatheceasedshavinghisupperlip.AtChathamhefollowedtheparadesanddrillswithgreatassiduity.Helistenedwiththeutmostattentiontotheconversationofhisbrotherofficers(ashecalledtheminafterdayssometimes),andlearnedasmanymilitarynamesashecould.InthesestudiestheexcellentMrs.
