"Bravo,Jos!"saidMr.Sedley;onhearingthebanteringofwhichwell-knownvoice,Josinstantlyrelapsedintoanalarmedsilence,andquicklytookhisdeparture.HedidnotlieawakeallnightthinkingwhetherornothewasinlovewithMissSharp;thepassionofloveneverinterferedwiththeappetiteortheslumberofMr.JosephSedley;buthethoughttohimselfhowdelightfulitwouldbetohearsuchsongsasthoseafterCutcherry—whatadistingueegirlshewas—howshecouldspeakFrenchbetterthantheGovernor-General’sladyherself—andwhatasensationshewouldmakeattheCalcuttaballs.
