Thereweretwogoldenbandsfastenedtothemthatpassedaroundthebackofherhead,wheretheywerelockedtogetherbyalittlekeythatwasattheendofachaintheGuardianoftheGatesworearoundhisneck. Whentheywereon,Dorothycouldnottakethemoffhadshewished,butofcourseshedidnotwishtobeblindedbytheglareoftheEmeraldCity,soshesaidnothing.

ThentheGuardianoftheGatesputonhisownglassesandtoldthemhewasreadytoshowthemtothePalace. Takingabiggoldenkeyfromapegonthewall,heopenedanothergate,andtheyallfollowedhimthroughtheportalintothestreetsoftheEmeraldCity.
