TheTinWoodmangaveasighofsatisfactionandloweredhisaxe,whichheleanedagainstthetree.
"Thisisagreatcomfort,"hesaid. "IhavebeenholdingthataxeintheaireversinceIrusted,andI’mgladtobeabletoputitdownatlast. Now,ifyouwilloilthejointsofmylegs,Ishallbeallrightoncemore."
Sotheyoiledhislegsuntilhecouldmovethemfreely; andhethankedthemagainandagainforhisrelease,forheseemedaverypolitecreature,andverygrateful.
"Imighthavestoodtherealwaysifyouhadnotcomealong,"hesaid; "soyouhavecertainlysavedmylife. Howdidyouhappentobehere?"
"WeareonourwaytotheEmeraldCitytoseetheGreatOz,"sheanswered,"andwestoppedatyourcottagetopassthenight."
"WhydoyouwishtoseeOz?"heasked.
"IwanthimtosendmebacktoKansas,andtheScarecrowwantshimtoputafewbrainsintohishead,"shereplied.
TheTinWoodmanappearedtothinkdeeplyforamoment.Thenhesaid:
"DoyousupposeOzcouldgivemeaheart?"
"Why,Iguessso,"Dorothyanswered. "ItwouldbeaseasyastogivetheScarecrowbrains."
