"Itshallbedone,"saidtheKing,andatoncetheWingedMonkeyscaughtthefourtravelersandTotoupintheirarmsandflewawaywiththem. AstheypassedoverthehilltheHammer-Headsyelledwithvexation,andshottheirheadshighintheair,buttheycouldnotreachtheWingedMonkeys,whichcarriedDorothyandhercomradessafelyoverthehillandsetthemdowninthebeautifulcountryoftheQuadlings.
"Thisisthelasttimeyoucansummonus,"saidtheleadertoDorothy; "sogood-byeandgoodlucktoyou."
"Good-bye,andthankyouverymuch,"returnedthegirl; andtheMonkeysroseintotheairandwereoutofsightinatwinkling.
ThecountryoftheQuadlingsseemedrichandhappy. Therewasfielduponfieldofripeninggrain,withwell-pavedroadsrunningbetween,andprettyripplingbrookswithstrongbridgesacrossthem. Thefencesandhousesandbridgeswereallpaintedbrightred,justastheyhadbeenpaintedyellowinthecountryoftheWinkiesandblueinthecountryoftheMunchkins. TheQuadlingsthemselves,whowereshortandfatandlookedchubbyandgood-natured,weredressedallinred,whichshowedbrightagainstthegreengrassandtheyellowinggrain.
TheMonkeyshadsetthemdownnearafarmhouse,andthefourtravelerswalkeduptoitandknockedatthedoor. Itwasopenedbythefarmer’swife,andwhenDorothyaskedforsomethingtoeatthewomangavethemallagooddinner,withthreekindsofcakeandfourkindsofcookies,andabowlofmilkforToto.
