ThegreatspiderwaslyingasleepwhentheLionfoundhim,anditlookedsouglythatitsfoeturneduphisnoseindisgust. Itslegswerequiteaslongasthetigerhadsaid,anditsbodycoveredwithcoarseblackhair. Ithadagreatmouth,witharowofsharpteethafootlong; butitsheadwasjoinedtothepudgybodybyaneckasslenderasawasp’swaist. ThisgavetheLionahintofthebestwaytoattackthecreature,andasheknewitwaseasiertofightitasleepthanawake,hegaveagreatspringandlandeddirectlyuponthemonster’sback. Then,withoneblowofhisheavypaw,allarmedwithsharpclaws,heknockedthespider’sheadfromitsbody. Jumpingdown,hewatchedituntilthelonglegsstoppedwiggling,whenheknewitwasquitedead.
