           Theybeganwalkingthroughthecountryofthechinapeople,andthefirstthingtheycametowasachinamilkmaidmilkingachinacow. Astheydrewnear,thecowsuddenlygaveakickandkickedoverthestool,thepail,andeventhemilkmaidherself,andallfellonthechinagroundwithagreatclatter. 

           Dorothywasshockedtoseethatthecowhadbrokenherlegoff,andthatthepailwaslyinginseveralsmallpieces,whilethepoormilkmaidhadanickinherleftelbow. 

           "There!"criedthemilkmaidangrily. "Seewhatyouhavedone!Mycowhasbrokenherleg,andImusttakehertothemender’sshopandhaveitgluedonagain. Whatdoyoumeanbycominghereandfrighteningmycow?" 

           "I’mverysorry,"returnedDorothy."Pleaseforgiveus." 

           Buttheprettymilkmaidwasmuchtoovexedtomakeanyanswer. Shepickedupthelegsulkilyandledhercowaway,thepooranimallimpingonthreelegs. Assheleftthemthemilkmaidcastmanyreproachfulglancesoverhershoulderattheclumsystrangers,holdinghernickedelbowclosetoherside. 

           Dorothywasquitegrievedatthismishap.
