TheLionthoughtitmightbeaswelltofrightentheWizard,sohegavealarge,loudroar,whichwassofierceanddreadfulthatTotojumpedawayfromhiminalarmandtippedoverthescreenthatstoodinacorner. Asitfellwithacrashtheylookedthatway,andthenextmomentallofthemwerefilledwithwonder. Fortheysaw,standinginjustthespotthescreenhadhidden,alittleoldman,withabaldheadandawrinkledface,whoseemedtobeasmuchsurprisedastheywere. TheTinWoodman,raisinghisaxe,rushedtowardthelittlemanandcriedout, "Whoareyou?"
"IamOz,theGreatandTerrible,"saidthelittleman,inatremblingvoice. "Butdon’tstrikeme—pleasedon’t—andI’lldoanythingyouwantmeto."
