           Silverplatesparkledinthejeweller’swindows,andthelightfallingobliquelyonthecathedralmademirrorsofthecornersofthegreystones;aflockofbirdsflutteredinthegreyskyroundthetrefoilbell-turrets;thesquare,resoundingwithcries,wasfragrantwiththeflowersthatbordereditspavement,roses,jasmines,pinks,narcissi,andtube-roses,unevenlyspacedoutbetweenmoistgrasses,catmint,andchickweedforthebirds;thefountainsgurgledinthecentre,andunderlargeumbrellas,amidstmelons,piledupinheaps,flower-women,bare-headed,weretwistingpaperroundbunchesofviolets.

           Theyoungmantookone.Itwasthefirsttimethathehadboughtflowersforawoman,andhisbreast,ashesmeltthem,swelledwithpride,asifthishomagethathemeantforanotherhadrecoileduponhimself.
