Itwascarven—itcouldnotpossiblyhavebeenitsnaturalshape,butjewelsdonotshowtheworkingofthetool—intotheshapeofascarab,withitswingsfolded,anditslegsandfeelerspressedbacktoitssides.Shiningthroughitswondrous"pigeon’sblood"colourweresevendifferentstars,eachofsevenpoints,insuchpositionthattheyreproducedexactlythefigureofthePlough.Therecouldbenopossiblemistakeastothisinthemindofanyonewhohadevernotedtheconstellation.Onitweresomehieroglyphicfigures,cutwiththemostexquisiteprecision,asIcouldseewhenitcametomyturntousethemagnifying-glass,whichMr.Trelawnytookfromhispocketandhandedtous.
Whenweallhadseenitfully,Mr.Trelawnyturneditoversothatitrestedonitsbackinacavitymadetoholditintheupperhalfofthebox.Thereversewasnolesswonderfulthantheupper,beingcarvedtoresembletheundersideofthebeetle.It,too,hadsomehieroglyphicfigurescutonit.Mr.Trelawnyresumedhislectureasweallsatwithourheadsclosetothiswonderfuljewel:
