InFenchurchStreeta‘fairchild,incostlyapparel,’stoodonastagetowelcomehisMajestytothecity.Thelastverseofhisgreetingwasinthesewords—
‘Welcome,OKing!asmuchasheartscanthink;
Welcome,again,asmuchastonguecantell,—
Welcometojoyoustongues,andheartsthatwillnotshrink:
Godtheepreserve,wepray,andwishtheeeverwell.’
Thepeopleburstforthinagladshout,repeatingwithonevoicewhatthechildhadsaid.TomCantygazedabroadoverthesurgingseaofeagerfaces,andhisheartswelledwithexultation;andhefeltthattheonethingworthlivingforinthisworldwastobeaking,andanation’sidol.
