TheKingwasnotonlydelightedtofindthatthecreaturewasonlyacalf,butdelightedtohavethecalf’scompany;forhehadbeenfeelingsolonesomeandfriendlessthatthecompanyandcomradeshipofeventhishumbleanimalwerewelcome.Andhehadbeensobuffeted,sorudelyentreatedbyhisownkind,thatitwasarealcomforttohimtofeelthathewasatlastinthesocietyofafellow-creaturethathadatleastasoftheartandagentlespirit,whateverloftierattributesmightbelacking.Soheresolvedtowaiverankandmakefriendswiththecalf.
Whilestrokingitssleekwarmback—foritlaynearhimandwithineasyreach—itoccurredtohimthatthiscalfmightbeutilisedinmorewaysthanone.Whereuponhere-arrangedhisbed,spreadingitdownclosetothecalf;thenhecuddledhimselfuptothecalf’sback,drewthecoversupoverhimselfandhisfriend,andinaminuteortwowasaswarmandcomfortableashehadeverbeeninthedownycouchesoftheregalpalaceofWestminster.
