           Thesunwassettingupononeoftherichgrassygladesofthatforest,whichwehavementionedinthebeginningofthechapter.Hundredsofbroad-headed,short-stemmed,wide-branchedoaks,whichhadwitnessedperhapsthestatelymarchoftheRomansoldiery,flungtheirgnarledarmsoverathickcarpetofthemostdeliciousgreensward;insomeplacestheywereintermingledwithbeeches,hollies,andcopsewoodofvariousdescriptions,socloselyastotallytointerceptthelevelbeamsofthesinkingsun;inotherstheyrecededfromeachother,formingthoselongsweepingvistas,intheintricacyofwhichtheeyedelightstoloseitself,whileimaginationconsidersthemasthepathstoyetwilderscenesofsilvansolitude.
