           Theyputhimunderlaughing-gasoneyear,poorlad,anddrewallhisteeth,andgavehimafalseset,becausehesufferedsoterriblywithtoothache; andthenitturnedtoneuralgiaandear-ache. Hewasneverwithoutacold,exceptoncefornineweekswhilehehadscarletfever;andhealwayshadchilblains. Duringthegreatcholerascareof1871,ourneighbourhoodwassingularlyfreefromit. Therewasonlyonereputedcaseinthewholeparish:thatcasewasyoungStivvings. 

           Hehadtostopinbedwhenhewasill,andeatchickenandcustardsandhot-housegrapes; andhewouldliethereandsob,becausetheywouldn’tlethimdoLatinexercises,andtookhisGermangrammarawayfromhim.
