"Herey’are,Maria;comealong,plentyofroom.""Allright,Tom;we’llgetinhere,"theywouldshout. Andtheywouldrunalong,carryingheavybags,andfightroundthedoortogetinfirst. Andonewouldopenthedoorandmountthesteps,andstaggerbackintothearmsofthemanbehindhim;andtheywouldallcomeandhaveasniff,andthendroopoffandsqueezeintoothercarriages,orpaythedifferenceandgofirst.
FromEuston,Itookthecheesesdowntomyfriend’shouse. Whenhiswifecameintotheroomshesmeltroundforaninstant. Thenshesaid:
"Whatisit? Tellmetheworst."
Isaid:
"It’scheeses. TomboughttheminLiverpool,andaskedmetobringthemupwithme."
AndIaddedthatIhopedsheunderstoodthatithadnothingtodowithme; andshesaidthatshewassureofthat,butthatshewouldspeaktoTomaboutitwhenhecameback.
MyfriendwasdetainedinLiverpoollongerthanheexpected;and,threedayslater,ashehadn’treturnedhome,hiswifecalledonme. Shesaid:
"WhatdidTomsayaboutthosecheeses?"
Irepliedthathehaddirectedtheyweretobekeptinamoistplace,andthatnobodywastotouchthem.
Shesaid:
"Nobody’slikelytotouchthem. Hadhesmeltthem?"
