           Theboyshuddledthemselvestogetherandsoughtthefriendlycompanionshipofthefire,thoughthedulldeadheatofthebreathlessatmospherewasstifling. Theysatstill,intentandwaiting.Thesolemnhushcontinued. Beyondthelightofthefireeverythingwasswallowedupintheblacknessofdarkness. Presentlytherecameaquiveringglowthatvaguelyrevealedthefoliageforamomentandthenvanished. Byandbyanothercame,alittlestronger. Thenanother. Thenafaintmoancamesighingthroughthebranchesoftheforestandtheboysfeltafleetingbreathupontheircheeks,andshudderedwiththefancythattheSpiritoftheNighthadgoneby. Therewasapause. Nowaweirdflashturnednightintodayandshowedeverylittlegrass-blade,separateanddistinct,thatgrewabouttheirfeet.Anditshowedthreewhite,startledfaces,too. Adeeppealofthunderwentrollingandtumblingdowntheheavensandlostitselfinsullenrumblingsinthedistance. Asweepofchillyairpassedby,rustlingalltheleavesandsnowingtheflakyashesbroadcastaboutthefire. Anotherfierceglarelituptheforestandaninstantcrashfollowedthatseemedtorendthetree-topsrightovertheboys’heads. Theyclungtogetherinterror,inthethickgloomthatfollowed. Afewbigrain-dropsfellpatteringupontheleaves.
