Thewool,previouslyimpregnatedwithasolutionofsoap,intendedontheonehandtofacilitatetheinterlacing,thecompression,andthesofteningofthewool,andontheothertopreventitsdiminutionbythebeating,issuedfromthemillintheshapeofthickfeltcloth.Theroughnesseswithwhichthestapleofwoolisnaturallyfilledweresothoroughlyentangledandinterlacedtogetherthatamaterialwasformedequallysuitableeitherforgarmentsorbedclothes.Itwascertainlyneithermerino,muslin,cashmere,rep,satin,alpaca,cloth,norflannel.Itwas"Lincolnianfelt,"andLincolnIslandpossessedyetanothermanufacture.Thecolonistshadnowwarmgarmentsandthickbedclothes,andtheycouldwithoutfearawaittheapproachofthewinterof1866-67.
Theseverecoldbegantobefeltaboutthe20thofJune,and,tohisgreatregret,Pencroftwasobligedtosuspendhisboat-building,whichhehopedtofinishintimefornextspring.
Thesailor’sgreatideawastomakeavoyageofdiscoverytoTaborIsland,althoughHardingcouldnotapproveofavoyagesimplyforcuriosity’ssake,fortherewasevidentlynothingtobefoundonthisdesertandalmostaridrock.Avoyageofahundredandfiftymilesinacomparativelysmallvessel,overunknownseas,couldnotbutcausehimsomeanxiety.
