Thiscleaningwasdoneinvatsfilledwithwater,whichwasmaintainedatthetemperatureofseventydegrees,andinwhichthewoolwassoakedforfour-and-twentyhours;itwasthenthoroughlywashedinbathsofsoda,and,whensufficientlydriedbypressure,itwasinastatetobecompressed,thatistosay,toproduceasolidmaterial,rough,nodoubt,andsuchaswouldhavenovalueinamanufacturingcenterofEuropeorAmerica,butwhichwouldbehighlyesteemedintheLincolnIslandmarkets.
Thissortofmaterialmusthavebeenknownfromthemostancienttimes,and,infact,thefirstwoolenstuffsweremanufacturedbytheprocesswhichHardingwasnowabouttoemploy.WhereHarding’sengineeringqualificationsnowcameintoplaywasintheconstructionofthemachineforpressingthewool;forheknewhowtoturningeniouslytoprofitthemechanicalforce,hithertounused,whichthewaterfallonthebeachpossessedtomoveafulling-mill.
Nothingcouldbemorerudimentary.Thewoolwasplacedintroughs,anduponitfellinturnsheavywoodenmallets;suchwasthemachineinquestion,andsuchithadbeenforcenturiesuntilthetimewhenthemalletswerereplacedbycylindersofcompression,andthematerialwasnolongersubjectedtobeating,buttoregularrolling.
