           OneofthemonkeysmadeaspeechandtoldhiscompanionsthatMowgli’scapturemarkedanewthinginthehistoryoftheBandar-log,forMowgliwasgoingtoshowthemhowtoweavesticksandcanestogetherasaprotectionagainstrainandcold. Mowglipickedupsomecreepersandbegantoworktheminandout,andthemonkeystriedtoimitate;butinaveryfewminutestheylostinterestandbegantopulltheirfriends’tailsorjumpupanddownonallfours,coughing. 

           "Iwishtoeat,"saidMowgli. "Iamastrangerinthispartofthejungle. Bringmefood,orgivemeleavetohunthere." 

           Twentyorthirtymonkeysboundedawaytobringhimnutsandwildpawpaws. Buttheyfelltofightingontheroad,anditwastoomuchtroubletogobackwithwhatwasleftofthefruit. Mowgliwassoreandangryaswellashungry,andheroamedthroughtheemptycitygivingtheStrangers’HuntingCallfromtimetotime,butnooneansweredhim,andMowglifeltthathehadreachedaverybadplaceindeed. "AllthatBaloohassaidabouttheBandar-logistrue,"hethoughttohimself. "TheyhavenoLaw,noHuntingCall,andnoleadersnothingbutfoolishwordsandlittlepickingthievishhands. SoifIamstarvedorkilledhere,itwillbeallmyownfault. ButImusttrytoreturntomyownjungle. Baloowillsurelybeatme,butthatisbetterthanchasingsillyroseleaveswiththeBandar-log." 

           Nosoonerhadhewalkedtothecitywallthanthemonkeyspulledhimback,tellinghimthathedidnotknowhowhappyhewas,andpinchinghimtomakehimgrateful.
