Andatlast,whentheflamesdieddown,andtheredlightofthelogsmadetheelephantslookasthoughtheyhadbeendippedinbloodtoo,MachuaAppa,theheadofallthedriversofalltheKeddahs—MachuaAppa,PetersenSahib’sotherself,whohadneverseenamaderoadinfortyyears:MachuaAppa,whowassogreatthathehadnoothernamethanMachuaAppa—leapedtohisfeet,withLittleToomaiheldhighintheairabovehishead,andshouted:"Listen,mybrothers.Listen,too,youmylordsinthelinesthere,forI,MachuaAppa,amspeaking!ThislittleoneshallnomorebecalledLittleToomai,butToomaioftheElephants,ashisgreat-grandfatherwascalledbeforehim.Whatnevermanhasseenhehasseenthroughthelongnight,andthefavoroftheelephant-folkandoftheGodsoftheJunglesiswithhim.Heshallbecomeagreattracker.HeshallbecomegreaterthanI,evenI,MachuaAppa!Heshallfollowthenewtrail,andthestaletrail,andthemixedtrail,withacleareye!HeshalltakenoharmintheKeddahwhenherunsundertheirbelliestoropethewildtuskers;andifheslipsbeforethefeetofthechargingbullelephant,thebullelephantshallknowwhoheisandshallnotcrushhim
