Hepickedupwithanoldstumpy-tailedalbatross,whotoldhimthatKerguelenIslandwastheveryplaceforpeaceandquiet,andwhenKotickwentdowntherehewasallbutsmashedtopiecesagainstsomewickedblackcliffsinaheavysleet-stormwithlightningandthunder.Yetashepulledoutagainstthegalehecouldseethateventherehadoncebeenasealnursery.Anditwassoinalltheotherislandsthathevisited.
Limmershingavealonglistofthem,forhesaidthatKotickspentfiveseasonsexploring,withafourmonths’resteachyearatNovastoshnah,whentheholluschickieusedtomakefunofhimandhisimaginaryislands.HewenttotheGallapagos,ahorriddryplaceontheEquator,wherehewasnearlybakedtodeath;hewenttotheGeorgiaIslands,theOrkneys,EmeraldIsland,LittleNightingaleIsland,Gough’sIsland,Bouvet’sIsland,theCrossets,andeventoalittlespeckofanislandsouthoftheCapeofGoodHope.ButeverywherethePeopleoftheSeatoldhimthesamethings.Sealshadcometothoseislandsonceuponatime,butmenhadkilledthemalloff.EvenwhenheswamthousandsofmilesoutofthePacificandgottoaplacecalledCapeCorrientes(thatwaswhenhewascomingbackfromGough’sIsland),hefoundafewhundredmangysealsonarockandtheytoldhimthatmencametheretoo.
