           Kotickmadehisdolphin-jumpintheairandshoutedasloudashecould:"Clam-eater!Clam-eater!"HeknewthatSeaVitchnevercaughtafishinhislifebutalwaysrootedforclamsandseaweed;thoughhepretendedtobeaveryterribleperson.NaturallytheChickiesandtheGooverooskiesandtheEpatkastheBurgomasterGullsandtheKittiwakesandthePuffins,whoarealwayslookingforachancetoberude,tookupthecry,andsoLimmershintoldmefornearlyfiveminutesyoucouldnothaveheardagunfiredonWalrusIslet.Allthepopulationwasyellingandscreaming"Clam-eater!Stareek!"whileSeaVitchrolledfromsidetosidegruntingandcoughing.

           "Nowwillyoutell?"saidKotick,alloutofbreath.

           "GoandaskSeaCow,"saidSeaVitch."Ifheislivingstill,he’llbeabletotellyou."

           "HowshallIknowSeaCowwhenImeethim?"saidKotick,sheeringoff.

           "He’stheonlythingintheseauglierthanSeaVitch,"screamedaBurgomastergull,wheelingunderSeaVitch’snose."Uglier,andwithworsemanners!Stareek!"

           KotickswambacktoNovastoshnah,leavingthegullstoscream.Therehefoundthatnoonesympathizedwithhiminhislittleattempttodiscoveraquietplacefortheseals.Theytoldhimthatmenhadalwaysdriventheholluschickieitwaspartoftheday’sworkandthatifhedidnotliketoseeuglythingsheshouldnothavegonetothekillinggrounds.Butnoneoftheothersealshadseenthekilling,andthatmadethedifferencebetweenhimandhisfriends.
