Butitdidnotallhappeninaday,thisgivingoverofhimself,bodyandsoul,totheman-animals. HecouldnotimmediatelyforegohiswildheritageandhismemoriesoftheWild. Thereweredayswhenhecrepttotheedgeoftheforestandstoodandlistenedtosomethingcallinghimfarandaway. Andalwayshereturned,restlessanduncomfortable,towhimpersoftlyandwistfullyatKiche’ssideandtolickherfacewitheager,questioningtongue.
WhiteFanglearnedrapidlythewaysofthecamp. Heknewtheinjusticeandgreedinessoftheolderdogswhenmeatorfishwasthrownouttobeeaten. Hecametoknowthatmenweremorejust,childrenmorecruel,andwomenmorekindlyandmorelikelytotosshimabitofmeatorbone. Andaftertwoorthreepainfuladventureswiththemothersofpart-grownpuppies,hecameintotheknowledgethatitwasalwaysgoodpolicytoletsuchmothersalone,tokeepawayfromthemasfaraspossible,andtoavoidthemwhenhesawthemcoming.
