Butthecubdidnotthinkinman-fashion. Hedidnotlookatthingswithwidevision. Hewassingle-purposed,andentertainedbutonethoughtordesireatatime. Besidesthelawofmeat,therewereamyriadotherandlesserlawsforhimtolearnandobey. Theworldwasfilledwithsurprise. Thestirofthelifethatwasinhim,theplayofhismuscles,wasanunendinghappiness. Torundownmeatwastoexperiencethrillsandelations. Hisragesandbattleswerepleasures. Terroritself,andthemysteryoftheunknown,ledtohisliving.
Andtherewereeasementsandsatisfactions. Tohaveafullstomach,todozelazilyinthesunshine—suchthingswereremunerationinfullforhisardoursandtoils,whilehisardoursandtollswereinthemselvesself-remunerative. Theywereexpressionsoflife,andlifeisalwayshappywhenitisexpressingitself. Sothecubhadnoquarrelwithhishostileenvironment. Hewasverymuchalive,veryhappy,andveryproudofhimself.
