Achangeinthebattlecrushedhimunderboththeirbodiesandwrenchedloosehishold. Thenextmomentthetwomothersseparated,and,beforetheyrushedtogetheragain,thelynxlashedoutatthecubwithahugefore-paw thatrippedhisshoulderopentotheboneandsenthimhurtlingsidewiseagainstthewall. Thenwasaddedtotheuproarthecub’sshrillyelpofpainandfright. Butthefightlastedsolongthathehadtimetocryhimselfoutandtoexperienceasecondburstofcourage; andtheendofthebattlefoundhimagainclingingtoahind-legandfuriouslygrowlingbetweenhisteeth.
Thelynxwasdead. Buttheshe-wolfwasveryweakandsick. Atfirstshecaressedthecubandlickedhiswoundedshoulder;butthebloodshehadlosthadtakenwithitherstrength, andforallofadayandanightshelaybyherdeadfoe’sside,withoutmovement,scarcelybreathing. Foraweeksheneverleftthecave,exceptforwater,andthenhermovementswereslowandpainful. Attheendofthattimethelynxwasdevoured,whiletheshe-wolf’swoundshadhealedsufficientlytopermithertotakethemeat-trailagain.
