Hecamedownashelvingbanktothestream. Hehadneverseenwaterbefore. Thefootinglookedgood.Therewerenoinequalitiesofsurface. Hesteppedboldlyoutonit;andwentdown,cryingwithfear,intotheembraceoftheunknown. Itwascold,andhegasped,breathingquickly. Thewaterrushedintohislungsinsteadoftheairthathadalwaysaccompaniedhisactofbreathing. Thesuffocationheexperiencedwaslikethepangofdeath. Tohimitsignifieddeath. Hehadnoconsciousknowledgeofdeath,butlikeeveryanimaloftheWild,hepossessedtheinstinctofdeath. Tohimitstoodasthegreatestofhurts. Itwastheveryessenceoftheunknown;itwasthesumoftheterrorsoftheunknown,theoneculminating andunthinkablecatastrophethatcouldhappentohim,aboutwhichheknewnothingandaboutwhichhefearedeverything.
