Theywerehowlingattheverygates,andsometimesheandtheFactorpausedfromthegametolisten andlaughatthefutileeffortsofthewolvestogetin. Andthen,sostrangewasthedream,therewasacrash. Thedoorwasburstopen. Hecouldseethewolvesfloodingintothebigliving-roomofthefort. TheywereleapingstraightforhimandtheFactor. Withtheburstingopenofthedoor,thenoiseoftheirhowlinghadincreasedtremendously. Thishowlingnowbotheredhim. Hisdreamwasmergingintosomethingelse—heknewnotwhat; butthroughitall,followinghim,persistedthehowling.

Hisstoutmittenstemporarilyprotectedhishands,andhescoopedlivecoalsintotheairinalldirections,untilthecampfiretookonthesemblanceofavolcano.
Butitcouldnotlastlong. Hisfacewasblisteringintheheat,hiseyebrowsandlashesweresingedoff,andtheheatwasbecomingunbearabletohisfeet.
