Attheendofsucharomp,whenblowandcuffandsnapandsnarlwerelastandfurious,theywouldbreakoffsuddenlyandstandseveralfeetapart,glaringateachother. Andthen,justassuddenly,likethesunrisingonastormysea,theywouldbegintolaugh. Thiswouldalwaysculminatewiththemaster’sarmsgoingaroundWhiteFang’sneckandshoulderswhilethelattercroonedandgrowledhislove-song.
ButnobodyelseeverrompedwithWhiteFang. Hedidnotpermitit. Hestoodonhisdignity,andwhentheyattemptedit,hiswarningsnarlandbristlingmanewereanythingbutplayful. Thatheallowedthemastertheselibertieswasnoreasonthatheshouldbeacommondog,lovinghereandlovingthere,everybody’spropertyforarompandgoodtime. Helovedwithsingleheartandrefusedtocheapenhimselforhislove.
Themasterwentoutonhorsebackagreatdeal,andtoaccompanyhimwasoneofWhiteFang’schiefdutiesinlife.
