Andbythisascertainedstandard,WhiteFangtreatedthemaccordingly. Whatwasofvaluetothemasterhevalued; whatwasdeartothemasterwastobecherishedbyWhiteFangandguardedcarefully.
Thusitwaswiththetwochildren. Allhislifehehaddislikedchildren. Hehatedandfearedtheirhands. ThelessonswerenottenderthathehadlearnedoftheirtyrannyandcrueltyinthedaysoftheIndianvillages. WhenWeedonandMaudhadfirstapproachedhim,hegrowledwarninglyandlookedmalignant. Acufffromthemasterandasharpwordhadthencompelledhimtopermittheircaresses,thoughhegrowledandgrowledundertheirtinyhands,andinthegrowltherewasnocrooningnote. Later,heobservedthattheboyandgirlwereofgreatvalueinthemaster’seyes. Thenitwasthatnocuffnorsharpwordwasnecessarybeforetheycouldpathim.
YetWhiteFangwasnevereffusivelyaffectionate. Heyieldedtothemaster’schildrenwithanillbuthonestgrace,andenduredtheirfoolingasonewouldendureapainfuloperation. Whenhecouldnolongerendure,hewouldgetupandstalkdeterminedlyawayfromthem. Butafteratime,hegreweventolikethechildren.Stillhewasnotdemonstrative. Hewouldnotgouptothem.Ontheotherhand,insteadofwalkingawayatsightofthem,hewaitedforthemtocometohim.
