Itwasjustafterthesun’sfutileefforttoappear,thatBillslippedtheriflefromunderthesled-lashingsandsaid:
"Youkeeprighton,Henry,I’mgoin’toseewhatIcansee."
"You’dbetterstickbythesled,"hispartnerprotested."You’veonlygotthreecartridges,an’there’snotellin’whatmighthappen."
"Who’scroakingnow?"Billdemandedtriumphantly.
Henrymadenoreply,andploddedonalone,thoughoftenhecastanxiousglancesbackintothegreysolitudewherehispartnerhaddisappeared. Anhourlater,takingadvantageofthecut-offsaroundwhichthesledhadtogo,Billarrived.
